🖼️UK Rules AI Cannot Be Recognized As Inventor

What Happened:

UK Supreme Court declares AI is not a creator, and therefore cannot legally get patents. Only humans and companies can do so, for now..

The court denied a petition from Stephen Thaler, founder of AI sustem DABUS, to legally claim his AI as an inventor. Thaler had previously appealed to the US Patent Office, which he also lost.

Why It’s Relevant:

Current laws do not recognize AI as an intellectual entity. However, there are still questions around AI-generated material and whether they can be protected under the law. As more people use AI to produce content, lawmakers will eventually be pushed into creating a legal framework to protect those efforts.

📱Welcome HUGS, Apple Iphone’s AI Future

The Details:

Apple’s two AI research papers introduce new techniques for 3D Avatars and immersive experience.

The first paper proposes HUGS (Human Guassian Splats), which could:

Generate 3D animated avatars from short monocular videos
Be 100 times faster in training and rendering than previous methods
Outperform other techniques on 3D reconstruction quality like NeuMan
Unlock new possibilities for Virtual, telepresence and synthetic media

The second paper addresses the challenge of deploying LLMs on Iphone/Ipad devices with limited memory.

Two main techniques are introduced: "Windowing" reuses activations from recent inferences and "row-column bundling" reads larger blocks of data by storing rows and columns together.
The optimizations could soon allow complex AI assistants and chatbots to run smoothly on iPhone, iPads, and other mobile devices.

What Happened:

Can AI impact Fast Food restaurants? Yes, yes it can. The question is, are robots good cooks? Only Gordon Ramsey can answer that.

California based company Miso Robotics is installing robots in a soon-to-open restaurant in Pasadena's Old Town.

The CaliExpress restaurant will feature a hamburger-making and French fry-making robot, using artificial intelligence to automate ordering and cooking processes. Human employees will still be present.

AI will be a resourceful tool to bolster ambitious medical projects and medical treatments
AI will transform educational learning through personalized individual tutoring using custom chatbots according to specific student needs
AI will boost productivity and improve performance rather than replace people’s jobs

AI has had a pretty good year full of innovations, but we’re just at the tip of the iceberg in terms of what it can do. 2024 seems to be a promising year for AI.

OpenAI’s board is given veto power to reverse any decision. This means they can override any decision that CEO Sam Altman makes.

OpenAI also released its “Preparedness Framework”, detailing its approach to safe AI development. This includes:

Evaluations and updating scoreboards for its models
New operational structure, with a new team to supervise technical work
Accountability protocols to be developed

Why It’s Important:

AI Safety is on everyone’s mind on the path to AGI development. This is a positive sign of healthy restructuring for that journey.
